Severance (tv show) (2022)And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. If the fundamental crisis of being a human being is our mortality, the next big one is the historic necessity of hard labor to survive. It is this fact that made the first season of Severance–which, make no mistake, I loved–kind of perplexing. At least the characters we’ve met so far seem to be trying to escape from home to work, when the reality is that we have spent millenia trying to escape from work. Even, as COVID and work from home amply demonstrated, just to escape the workplace. Of course, it could be that the cult of Keir is screening applicants and only accepting those so mentaslly damaged and frail that they can be manipulated for some nefarious purpose. But the reactions of characters in the outside world–as at the no food dinner party–suggest that most people don’t understand the desire to be completely disconnected from labor so that all one’s waking hours would be spent at leisure. This bit of the otherwise terrific show rings false.
