Gravity (2013)

[It seems justified to assume that everyone has seen this movie so it is spoiled in its entirety ahead.]

Reading reviews of this film felt like overdosing on crazy pills, as they--necessarily--praised the spectacle but--inexplicably--denied it had any substance. Now you may not care for the message or you may find it shallow, but it's pretty unavoidable unless you;'re surpassing ignorant.

It begins with the opening screen roll which ends with: “Life in space is impossible.” And what are the qualities of space that the film focuses on? Isolation and silence. Ryan Stone could nearly be Christ on the Cross.

The one tinny note in the film is that no one would let someone so visibly bereft and damaged--by the death of her daughter--travel into space. And in one of the saddest moments in the movie, she pleads with a ham operator who she can not even communicate with: “No one will mourn for me. No one will pray for my soul. Will you mourn for me? Will you pray for me? I mean I’d pray for myself, but I’ve never prayed—nobody ever taught me how.” But she does offer her own sort of ersatz prayer and it is answered in the form of Kowalski returning to encourage her.

Rather than just embracing death--note that she's certain it will reunite her with her daughter--she determines to survive. She surrenders to the pull of Earth and life.

And when she does return she is plunged underwater in a rather transparent baptism scene before emerging from the water reborn.

It's not a story about space travel. It's a film about finding faith, about accepting the beauty of our world even in the face of the grief our mortality induces.
