Grizzly Central (Essay) (2011)If Mark Twain were alive and a modern-day fly-fisherman, he still would be hard put to top John Gierach in the one-liner department. At a point in life where I was somewhat alone and very uncertain about the future, I found an odd comfort food: fishing books. I don't even know how many I read nor all of the authors--Robert Traver, William Tapply, Nick Lyons, WD Wetherell, etc.--but no one was better company than John Gierach. He's funny and self-deprecating while being learned and informative. I honestly never did pick up a fly rod, nor do you need to, but you ought to read any essay of his you can find. Here's a taste from this one: Last August Dave Brown, A.K. Best, and I were barreling down an old, wet logging road in the mountains of British Columbia, on our way to a cutthroat trout stream, going faster than you’d thing you’d want to through slick mud, standing puddles, and jumbled rocks. We’d been barreling for an hour without seeing another vehicle or even a tire track in the mud, and, as far as I could tell, we were nowhere near a river.
